Grinton Smelting Mill

The ruins of Grinton Smelting Mill sit quietly in the Wensleydale valley, a proper reminder of when this dale was alive with lead and silver mining. You'll find the stone footprint of the mill itself - not much left standing, but enough to piece together what happened here in the 18th and 19th centuries. The site tells you straight away it was serious industrial work: thick stone walls, the foundations where the furnaces ran hot, and channels where water once powered the machinery.

Walkers get the most from this. It's not a destination on its own - you're here because you're already out on the dales - but it's the kind of stop that makes a good walk better. The setting matters as much as the ruins. You get proper views across Wensleydale, and the contrast between the industrial wreckage and the green hills now reclaiming it is rather striking. History types will appreciate the engineering; families with younger kids might find it underwhelming if they're expecting something more intact.

There's no visitor centre or facilities, and admission is free because there's nothing to guard. Allow twenty minutes to walk around and take photos. The nearest town is Leyburn, about four miles south. If you're staying at Park Leisure's Yorkshire Dales Holiday Park nearby, this works nicely as a morning diversion on a circular walk - take the time to read up on the lead trade before you go, or it'll just look like old stones.
