Grindon Lough

The water at Grindon Lough sits perfectly still most days, reflecting the Northumberland fells like a dark mirror. It's a modest reservoir - nothing dramatic - but there's something about the quietness that gets under your skin. You'll find it south of Hexham, tucked into moorland that feels properly remote even though civilisation is only a few miles away.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is rather the point. The walk around the water takes a decent couple of hours depending on your pace and how many times you stop to stare. The eastern shore is the more interesting route if you're short on time - better views across the water and fewer boggy patches underfoot. Bring decent boots. This is working landscape, not a manicured park.

Walkers come here. Locals know it. Families with restless toddlers will find it a bit sparse - there's nowhere to hide if the weather turns and you're caught out. But if you're the sort who likes moorland and don't mind a bit of wind in your face, this works brilliantly as a morning outing before heading into Hexham for lunch.

It fits neatly into a Northumberland holiday - pair it with Hadrian's Wall Campsite or Herding Hill Farm for somewhere to lay your head, both within striking distance. Grindon Lough won't blow your mind, but it's the kind of place that quietly stays with you.
