Grimstead Beeches

Walk into Grimstead Beeches and you're immediately under a cathedral of ancient beech trees - the sort of place that makes you understand why people get sentimental about English woodland. The canopy is so dense in places that even on bright days you're walking in dappled green shadow, and in autumn the ground becomes a russet carpet so thick it muffles your footsteps entirely.

It's proper woodland rather than a managed park - no visitor centre, no tea shop, no fuss. You'll find a network of paths threading through the trees, though they're not always sign-posted, so it pays to have an OS map or a phone with offline maps loaded. The walk works well for families with older kids and anyone who genuinely likes being in a forest without the infrastructure of a country estate.
