Grimsby Golf Club

Out towards Cleethorpes, past the seafront tat and away from the beach crowds, sits Grimsby Golf Club - a proper 18-hole course that's been going since 1922. The layout is flat and open, which means the wind off the North Sea gets a proper say in how you play. It's the sort of course that punishes loose shots rather than asking you to navigate jungle. You'll find fairways lined with rough grass and a handful of water hazards that actually come into play, especially on the par 3s.

Golfers will get the most from this place. If you're not swinging clubs, there's not much to see from outside the gates. It's a working members' club with a decent clubhouse, and they do take visiting golfers on weekdays, though best to ring ahead first rather than turning up hoping for a game. Plan on four hours minimum, longer if the course is busy.

The real draw here is fitting it into a Cleethorpes break. The town itself is only ten minutes away, so you could easily do eighteen holes in the morning, head into town for fish and chips, then mess about on the seafront. Haven Cleethorpes Beach Holiday Park is close by and makes a reasonable base - five or six miles from the course. It's honest golf on a modest course, nothing flashy, but that's rather the point. Go if golf is your thing. Skip it if it isn't.
