Grimsbury Reservoir

The water here is proper still on a calm day - you can see right across to the tree line on the far bank. Grimsbury Reservoir, just outside Oxford, is one of those places locals know about but most visitors miss entirely. It's a working water supply, which means you won't find crowds or commercialised attractions, just a decent expanse of open water with walking paths around the perimeter.

The circuit takes about an hour at a leisurely pace, depending which direction you fancy. Birdwatchers come here regularly - you'll spot mallards, coots, and if you're lucky, herons fishing along the shallows. Walkers use it as a straightforward leg-stretch between Oxford outings, nothing too demanding. The views aren't dramatic, but there's something quite restful about the flatness of it all, especially on an overcast afternoon when the sky and water blur together.

Families with young kids won't get hours out of this one. It's a quick circuit, not a destination in itself. What it does offer is a proper break from Oxford's cobbled streets without needing to drive far. Free access, no facilities to speak of, so bring your own water and a decent pair of shoes - the paths can get muddy after rain.

If you're based at Anita's Touring Caravan Park or Fir Tree Campsite nearby, it's worth a morning walk before heading into town. Mount Farm Park is a touch further out. It's the sort of spot you'd suggest to guests rather than plan a special trip for, but that's not a criticism - sometimes that's exactly what you need.
