Greensforge Roman Fort

The earthworks are still there if you know where to look - low grassy banks running through farmland near Kidderminster that most people drive straight past without noticing. Greensforge Roman Fort is essentially a set of buried remains from around AD70, when the Romans were consolidating their grip on the Midlands, and visiting it requires a fair bit of imagination and a decent OS map.

You won't find visitor facilities, interpretation boards, or anything remotely obvious. What you get instead is the chance to walk across actual Roman defensive ditches and ramparts - still visible as gentle humps and dips in the landscape after nearly two millennia. It's the sort of thing archaeology enthusiasts and local history buffs will find genuinely absorbing. Kids under twelve will probably get bored within ten minutes unless they're genuinely interested in Romans.

The site is free and accessible year-round, though winter walks here are muddy and spring is nicer. Allow an hour if you're taking it seriously with a map and some background reading. If you're just having a casual look, twenty minutes is realistic.

It works well if you're based at Wolverley Camping and Caravanning Club Site - the fort is only about six miles away, making it a decent half-day excursion when the weather's decent. Pair it with Kidderminster town itself and you've got an afternoon sorted. Honestly, unless Roman archaeology is your thing, it's a bit underwhelming on its own.
