Greenplats Hill

The walk up Greenplats Hill from Kirkby Stephen takes a good hour if you're not hurrying, and it's worth every minute. The summit sits at just over 600 metres, which doesn't sound much until you're halfway up and your legs start reminding you they exist. The views across the Pennines open up properly from about three-quarters of the way, spreading out across limestone moorland that looks almost purple in certain light.

It's a straightforward hike rather than a technical climb, making it ideal for families with decent fitness levels and walkers after something that doesn't require ropes or specialist gear. The paths are marked well enough, though it can get boggy in wet weather so proper boots are non-negotiable. Allow three hours for the full round trip if you're stopping to catch your breath and take photos.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the moorland character of the walk - this is proper Pennine country, the sort of place that shaped the region's wool trade and farming heritage. The terrain tells its own story without needing plaques or visitor centres.
