Greenlee Lough

The water at Greenlee Lough sits dark and still, ringed by moorland that feels properly remote even though Hexham's only a short drive away. It's a glacial lake, one of the few natural ones in Northumberland, and the walk around it is straightforward enough for families but with enough solitude to feel like you've escaped somewhere.

You won't find much in the way of facilities here - no cafes, no visitor centre, just the lough itself and the landscape. That's rather the appeal. The circuit takes roughly an hour depending on pace, and the paths are decent underfoot. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching; the water attracts quite a few species. On a grey day it looks moody and atmospheric. On a clear one, the moorland views stretch properly far.

It works brilliantly as part of a longer Northumberland stay, especially if you're camped nearby at Hadrian's Wall Campsite or Stonehaugh - both within 4 miles and rated highly. The area's got that edge-of-the-world quality without actually being difficult to reach. Kids will manage it without complaint, though they might find it a bit stark if they're expecting something more obviously dramatic.

Go on a weekday if possible. Weekends bring dog walkers and the odd family, but it never gets rammed. Spring and early autumn are best - the moorland colours shift nicely and the midges are less vicious. Free to visit, as with most Northumberland landscapes.
