Great Wood

Great Wood sits on the edge of Holford in the Quantock Hills, a proper chunk of Somerset woodland that rewards a decent walk but won't set your heart racing. It's ancient stuff - mixed broadleaf forest with paths threading through beech, oak and ash that feel genuinely quiet. You'll find yourself on sloping terrain with views opening up toward the Bristol Channel if you push to the higher ground. The woodland itself is the draw here rather than any particular feature or visitor facility. There's nothing fancy: no café, no visitor centre, just trees and trails.

Walkers will get the most from it, especially if you're combining Great Wood with a broader loop through the Quantocks. The terrain is manageable but not flat - good for building an appetite if you're camping locally at Moorhouse Campsite or Mill Farm, both within a few miles. Families with restless kids under ten might find an hour enough before boredom sets in, though older ones who like a genuine woodland walk will appreciate it more.

It's free to access. Allow two to three hours if you're doing a proper circuit rather than just a quick twenty-minute spin through. Spring and early summer work best when the canopy's thick with green and you get some dappled shade. Winter's muddy but atmospheric. The nearest facilities are in Holford itself - small village, nothing grand, but adequate for supplies. If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan parks, Great Wood makes a solid morning or afternoon option without the tourist crowds you'd get elsewhere in Somerset.
