Great Western Ave Park and Playing Field

The playing fields stretch out flat and purposeful, hemmed in by trees on the northern edge - this is proper local park territory rather than anything Instagram-worthy. Great Western Ave is the sort of place Bridgend families use without fuss: football pitches, open grass, woodland strips along one side where you can actually see things growing rather than just manicured borders.

It's genuinely useful if you're staying nearby in Porthcawl, maybe at Trecco Bay Holiday Park five miles south. Kids need a run about? This delivers. Dog walkers get the trees. Anyone after a proper walk gets a bit less here - the space is tidy but compact, and there's no dramatic landscape to speak of. The woodland section has some real appeal on a damp Welsh afternoon when everything smells like it should, but you're not talking about hour-long rambles.

Free to visit, obviously. No facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need. Best on weekday mornings when the pitches aren't crowded with weekend league matches. Summer's the obvious call, but autumn's actually nicer if rain doesn't bother you - fewer people, the woods feel more substantial.

The real value here is being local. If you're based in Porthcawl for a holiday week and need a quick break from the seafront, it does the job. It's not a destination in itself - don't drive out specially. But slot it into a wider Bridgend visit and it works fine.
