Great Thurlow Church, All Saints

The moment you push open the heavy wooden doors of All Saints in Great Thurlow, you're stepping into seven centuries of village life. This is a proper working church, not some museum piece - you'll find real worshippers here, not tourists clicking photos.

The interior hits you immediately. The nave stretches longer than you'd expect from outside, with a timber roof that's genuinely impressive if you bother looking up. There's medieval stained glass that's survived rather better than most English parish churches, and the chancel has some lovely carved detail. Great Thurlow itself is a proper village - about three miles east of Newmarket - so you'll need a car to get here. Allow 30 minutes maximum. Go on a weekday morning if you can - quieter, and you're less likely to interrupt anything. Free to enter, naturally. History enthusiasts will get more from it than families with young kids, if we're honest.
