Great Roova Crags

The walk up to Great Roova Crags rewards you with proper views across Wensleydale. It's a proper hill rather than a gentle stroll - steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs, but nothing that requires proper climbing gear or experience.

You get limestone outcrops at the top, grass moorland, and on a clear day the valley spreads out below you in all directions. The crags themselves aren't dramatic cliff faces - more rocky tors breaking through the hillside - but they're distinctive enough to make the walk feel purposeful rather than just another fell trudge.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's a decent half-day outing from Leyburn, probably two to three hours depending on your fitness and how long you linger at the top. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper climb will manage it fine; younger ones might find the gradient tedious. History types won't find much up there beyond the landscape itself - this is about the walk and the view, not heritage.

Free to access, obviously. The best approach is from the Wensleydale side, though paths can get boggy after rain so proper boots are worth having. If you're based at Yorkshire Dales Holiday Park or Eastfield Glamping Farm nearby, this makes a cracking morning or afternoon activity. Combine it with Leyburn itself for a full day - there's enough in the market town to justify the trip.
