Great Paxton Recreation Ground

The Recreation Ground at Great Paxton is a proper working nature reserve - the sort of place where you actually see wildlife rather than just hope for it. It sits east of St. Neots, and if you're staying at the Camping and Caravanning Club Site in town, it's barely a half-hour drive away. Wetland habitat dominates here, with reed beds and open water that attract serious numbers of birds, particularly in winter and during migration seasons. Bring binoculars and a decent camera if you're into that sort of thing - the variety is genuinely impressive.

The site itself is low-key. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no fuss. You get a car park and access to walking trails that weave through the reserve. It's not strenuous - more of a gentle potter than a proper hike - making it ideal if you've got older children or grandparents in tow. Allow a couple of hours to do it properly without rushing. The best times are early morning or late afternoon when birds are most active; midday can feel a bit quiet.
