Great Notley Bird of Freedom

The Great Notley Bird of Freedom stands just outside Braintree as a striking public art installation overlooking the nature reserve below. This copper sculpture catches the light differently depending on the time of day, and it's genuinely worth the short walk to reach it if you're staying in the area.

The reserve itself is proper Essex wetland - reed beds, open water, and the kind of birdwatching territory that rewards patience. You'll see herons, grebes, and if you time it right, the occasional rarer visitor. It's not dramatic scenery, but there's something quietly absorbing about standing still and letting the place reveal itself. Bring binoculars and don't expect crowds.

Birdwatchers will get the most from this, though families with school-age children who've got into nature spotting will enjoy it too. Younger kids might find an hour enough unless they're the genuinely patient type. The walk to the sculpture itself takes fifteen minutes or so from the car park.

It's free, which is always welcome, and works well as a morning or late-afternoon stop if you're based at Hill Farm campsite nearby. Pair it with a proper walk around Braintree town centre if the reserve leaves you wanting more structure to your day. Spring and autumn are best for birdwatching - fewer mosquitoes and better light for photography.
