Great Musgrave Hill

The walk up Great Musgrave Hill rewards you with views across the Eden Valley that stretch for miles - proper fell country, this, with the Pennines rising in the distance. It's not a dramatic peak by Lake District standards, but that's rather the point. The climb from Kirkby Stephen takes about ninety minutes at a steady pace, and you're sharing the hillside mostly with sheep and curlews rather than crowds.

The summit sits at just over 500 metres, and on a clear day you can trace the line of the Eden towards Appleby. The ground underfoot is mixed - boggy sections alternate with firmer grass, so decent boots matter. Walkers with moderate fitness will find it manageable; families with younger legs should budget extra time and be prepared to turn back if the weather rolls in quickly, as it does up here.

This isn't a destination that demands half a day. Two to three hours round trip, and you're done. What makes it work as part of a wider stay is its position - Kirkby Stephen sits on the Pennine Way, so you might combine this with other local walks, or use it as a morning sortie before settling into Gillcumber Glamping Pods or Wild Rose Holiday Park for the night. The pods at Gillcumber are closer and genuinely well-reviewed, which matters when you've had a day on the fells.
