Great Kitchen

The Great Kitchen at Ludlow Castle is one of those rare medieval structures that actually makes you stop and think about what life was like 700 years ago. You're looking at a proper functioning kitchen from the 1430s - massive fireplace, original stonework, the lot - which is genuinely unusual for this period. Most castles have ruins; this one has survived largely intact.

It's a compact visit, maybe 20 minutes if you're thorough, but absolutely worth the detour if you're already exploring Ludlow Castle itself (which you really should be). The kitchen tells a story about scale, labour, and medieval feasting that you just don't get from reading about it. History types will find it fascinating - the architectural details are exceptional. Families with older kids might engage well, though under-tens could lose interest quickly unless they're genuinely keen on medieval domestic life.

Access is included with Ludlow Castle admission - check their website for current opening times and fees before you go. The castle dominates the town centre, so it's impossible to miss. Ludlow itself is proper lovely, with excellent pubs and restaurants, making it a strong base for a few days. If you're caravan camping nearby - Ludlow Touring & Holiday Home Park is closest at just over a mile away - you've got everything you need within walking distance. Visit in autumn or spring when Ludlow isn't rammed with tourists. Summer sees crowds, which takes the shine off the experience.
