Great Borne

Great Borne rises to 902 metres above Cockermouth, and on a clear day the walk up rewards you with views across the Lake District's northwestern edge. It's not one of the headline peaks - you won't find crowds here like you do on Catbells or Skiddaw - which is precisely why it's worth the effort.

The ascent takes roughly two hours from the base, through open moorland and fell grassland. It's a proper lung-burner in places, but nothing technical. Families with older kids (say, eight and up) will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the exposed sections tedious. Serious walkers will appreciate the relative quiet and the chance to bag a Wainwright without the queuing.

There's no fee or facilities at the peak itself - this is the old-school fell experience. Pack water and something to eat. The best approach depends on where you're starting from; check a local map or guidebook for route options. Autumn and spring offer the most reliable weather, though winter ascents here catch proper views when the snow's fresh.

If you're camping at Whinfell Hall Farm Campsite just down the road, Great Borne makes a solid morning or afternoon outing. It pairs well with exploring Cockermouth itself or combining it with walks around Whinlatter Forest. The fell doesn't demand a full day, so you've got time for other things - that's its strength.
