Great Bedwyn Memorial Field

The Memorial Field sits just outside Pewsey - a proper slice of Wiltshire countryside that doesn't announce itself loudly, which is rather the point. This is a nature reserve run by the community, and it's the sort of place where you actually notice things: the way light falls across the meadows, the birds working the hedgerows, the sheer quiet of it all.

It's essentially a meadow with purpose. The field was established as a memorial and has been left to rewild itself, which means wildflowers take over come spring and early summer. The walking is straightforward - there are paths through and around the site, nothing strenuous - so families with younger kids won't be wrestling with any steep climbs. Most people spend an hour here, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to stop and watch dragonflies.

Birdwatchers get genuine value from it. So do botanists. If you're after manicured gardens and obvious attractions, though, look elsewhere. There's no café, no facilities to speak of, and admission details are thin on the ground - best to check locally in Pewsey before you head over.
