The woodland around Chepstow draws walkers all year, and Great Barnets Wood delivers what you'd hope for - proper native forest with enough shade and quiet to actually hear yourself think. It's a straightforward sort of place, neither massive nor cramped, with decent trails that wind through beech and oak without demanding crampons or a GPS unit.

The best time is late spring through early autumn when the canopy's full and the undergrowth actually rewards a bit of poking about. Winter's perfectly walkable if you're not fussed about mud.
