Gravel Pond

The water at Gravel Pond sits still and grey most days, ringed by rough scrubland and the kind of industrial backdrop that doesn't make it onto postcards. It's a proper working gravel extraction site near Newark, and that's rather the point - this isn't a manicured leisure destination, it's a genuine wildlife haven that emerged almost by accident from decades of quarrying.

What you get here is serious birdwatching territory. The exposed water and margins attract wintering wildfowl, waders, and the odd rarity that gets twitchers reaching for their binoculars. Spring and autumn migrations are the standout seasons; winter brings dabbling ducks and the occasional greenshank. If you're the sort who can stand still for hours tracking movement through reeds, you'll find it absorbing. Casual visitors after a scenic walk might feel a bit flat about it.

It's free to access and works well as a morning excursion from any of the nearby parks - BrackenXcapes, Wigwam Holidays Orchard Stables, or Milestone Caravan Park are all within striking distance. Binoculars essential, waterproof boots advisable. Allow a couple of hours if you're serious about birds; thirty minutes if you're just passing through. The light's best from late morning onwards, and weekdays are quieter than weekends. Not a destination that'll keep young children entertained for long, but absolutely worth the short drive from Newark if you've got a birding interest or just fancy somewhere genuinely unhurried.
