Grantchester Road

Grantchester Road runs south from Cambridge city centre and has become something of a pilgrimage route for rowers, cyclists, and anyone who fancies a proper stretch of the legs. The road itself winds through flat Cambridgeshire countryside toward the village of Grantchester, passing meadows, the Backs (where punts cluster on the Cam), and eventually the famous Grantchester Meadows that inspired Rupert Brooke.

What draws people here isn't a single "attraction" in the traditional sense - it's the cycling and walking culture. Locals and visitors bike down this route constantly, stopping at various points to watch crews training on the river or simply enjoying the open space. The towpath alongside the Cam is free and accessible, though the road itself is just a regular route through town that happens to lead somewhere pleasant.

If you're staying at Cambridge Camping and Caravanning Club Site or one of the other parks within easy reach (Highfield Farm is 2.8 miles away), this is an excellent half-day outing. Families with older kids will enjoy the cycling potential - it's flat, low-traffic, and leads to Grantchester village where there's a decent tea garden. Historians and literature types might enjoy the Brooke connection. Serious walkers can push further into the surrounding countryside.

Allow a couple of hours if you're combining it with a village tea stop. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the student cycling rush. It's free, naturally, and weather-dependent - can get muddy after rain.
