Granham Hill

The walk up Granham Hill takes you onto one of Wiltshire's proper high points, and the view across the chalk downs is worth every step of the climb. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Lake District - but that's rather the point. The landscape rolls out in soft waves, all pasture and distant villages, with enough space to actually breathe.

From the summit you can pick out the Vale of Pewsey stretched below, and on a clear day the vista extends far enough to make you feel like you've genuinely accomplished something. The hill itself is straightforward to reach from Pewsey, and the walk takes no more than an hour or so depending on your pace. Walkers will find it satisfying rather than punishing - it's the sort of place where you can take your time and actually notice things.

Families with reasonably capable kids will manage it fine, though it's not the most dramatic destination if you're after constant action. Bring a packed lunch and spend a proper hour at the top. The real appeal here is that you won't be fighting crowds or queuing for anything. It's just you and the downs.

If you're based at Hillview Park or Totteridge Farm Camping Pods nearby, this makes an excellent half-day excursion. Both sites are close enough that you could be walking within twenty minutes. Go in late afternoon when the light softens - that's when the Wiltshire landscape really shows what it's got.
