Grange Park

Grange Park sits just outside Ilkley and delivers exactly what you want from a Yorkshire nature reserve - proper countryside without the faffing about. It's a working landscape rather than some polished visitor attraction, which means you get actual wildlife instead of the manicured stuff.

Walkers and nature enthusiasts will find genuine value here. The paths wind through woodland and open grassland, and you'll spot more than just the usual suspects if you keep your eyes open. It's the sort of place where an hour turns into three without you noticing, though families with very small children might find it a bit limited for an all-day outing.

The reserve works brilliantly as a half-day stop if you're based at Olicana Park down the road - close enough for a morning ramble before heading back for lunch. You can do the main circuit in under two hours if you're not stopping to photograph every bird, though there's no point rushing it.

Access appears to be free, which is refreshing. It's best visited during spring and early summer when the birds are active and the woodland's actually pleasant to walk through. Winter's a bit bleak, and peak summer can get muddy if there's been rain.
