Grange of Elcho

The Grange of Elcho sits quietly beside the River Tay, about four miles south of Perth, and it's the sort of place that rewards the detour even if you're not a ruins fanatic. What you're looking at are the remains of a 13th-century monastic grange - basically a medieval farm run by monks to feed the monastery at Scone. The stonework that survives gives you a genuine sense of medieval rural life, which beats the usual castle-and-cathedral circuit.

Historically inclined visitors and walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a dramatic ruin - no towers, no dramatic collapse - but the riverside setting is proper lovely, and the walk here along the Tay path is the real draw for families. Kids won't spend hours here, but the stones are accessible and the landscape makes it feel less like a history lesson and more like a ramble with something to find at the end.

Access is free and unrestricted, though there's no visitor infrastructure to speak of. You can wander round at your own pace - allow 30 to 45 minutes unless you're the type to sit on the bank for an hour sketching or taking photos. Early morning or late afternoon light is cracking here.
