Grange Farm PYO Pumpkins & Sunflowers

You arrive at Grange Farm on a late summer afternoon when the light turns everything golden, and suddenly you understand why people drive out here from halfway across Lincolnshire. This is a pick-your-own operation - pumpkins in autumn, sunflowers in summer - where you grab a basket, head into the fields, and actually cut your own fruit from the vine. No pretence, no gift shop nonsense, just straightforward farming.

The pumpkin season runs through September and October, which is when families descend in force. Kids genuinely engage here because they're doing something rather than watching someone else do it. The sunflower patch is worth timing your visit for if you're there in July or early August - the rows stretch on and the photo opportunities are obvious, though you'll share them with others who've had the same idea.

It's free to wander around, but you pay for what you pick by the kilo. Bring gloves or accept muddy hands. Allow an hour if you're choosing carefully; 20 minutes if you're just grabbing the obvious specimens. Market Rasen is your nearest town, about 6 miles south.

If you're staying at Wolds View Country Park or Station Farm - both solid caravan sites within easy reach - this makes a decent half-day outing rather than a destination in itself. It's honest work, genuinely pleasant on a dry day, and the farm shop usually has something worth buying even if you've not come prepared for picking. Go early on weekends to avoid the crowds.
