The Grand Opera House sits right in the heart of York, a proper Victorian theatre that's been pulling in crowds since 1867. Walking in through those ornate doors, you're immediately transported - the gilt boxes, the red velvet seats, the whole interior screams Edwardian grandeur without feeling stuffy about it. It's the sort of place that still hosts everything from classic opera to pantomime to contemporary theatre, so what's on really matters when you plan a visit.

If you're theatre-minded, this is unmissable. The building itself is worth seeing even if you're just there for a look around the foyer, though obviously you'll get far more from catching an actual performance. The acoustics are genuinely excellent - it's not one of those old theatres where you're straining to hear from the back rows. Families with kids often come for the Christmas pantomime, which runs for weeks and is reliably silly in the best possible way.

You'll need to check their website or call ahead for what's on and ticket prices, as programming changes constantly. Allow a good couple of hours if you're seeing a show - arrive early, grab a drink in the bar, soak up the atmosphere. It's easily combined with a York holiday park stay; both Nurseries Caravan Park and Wagtail Park are just a few miles out, so you're well positioned for an evening in the theatre without the stress of driving back to the coast. Word of warning: if you're staying around during the quieter months, do check the schedule first - it's not permanently busy.
