Grafton Down

The walk up Grafton Down takes about twenty minutes from the car park near Pewsey, and it's worth every step. You're climbing chalk grassland with proper views across the Wiltshire downs - the kind of landscape that looks exactly the same as it did five hundred years ago. At the top there's an Iron Age fort, though honestly the earthworks are subtle enough that you won't be seeing dramatic ramparts. What you will see is why someone chose this spot centuries ago: commanding views in all directions, good defensible ground, nowhere to hide approaching enemies.

It's a cracking spot for walkers and history types, though young kids might find the actual fort a bit underwhelming unless they've got a keen interest in ancient Britain. The real draw is the walk itself and the downland scenery. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the chalk grassland supports some proper rarities. Allow a solid hour for the round trip including a bit of poking about at the top.

The terrain is steep in places and can be muddy after rain, so good boots matter more than a clear day. There's no facilities up there, so take water. It's free to visit, obviously - it's open downland.

The downs around here are genuinely fine walking country, and Grafton Down gives you a proper sense of why this part of Wiltshire has been inhabited for thousands of years.
