Gorse Hill and Elbury Mount Local Nature Reserve

Two modest hills rising out of the Worcestershire countryside just outside Worcester - that's the core of it, though don't let simplicity fool you. Gorse Hill and Elbury Mount work together as a local nature reserve that rewards a proper walk far more than a quick stroll.

The gorse is the real draw, especially in late spring when it blazes yellow across the slopes. You'll get proper views back toward Worcester from the higher points, and the paths wind through grassland that's managed to stay reasonably wild. It's the kind of place where you actually spot things - birds, rabbits, the occasional roe deer if you're lucky and quiet enough.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not taxing - the hills are gentle rather than steep - but it does demand an hour or two to do it justice. Families with young children might find it a bit "just more of the same path" after forty minutes, but older kids who actually enjoy being outdoors will be fine. It's free access too, which takes the sting out of a mediocre day.

The real value lies in pairing it with a longer stay at one of the nearby parks. Cob House Countryside Park or The Coppice Leisure Park both sit within striking distance - five to six miles - making this a sensible leg-stretching detour if you're basing yourself for a week. Go in April or May when the gorse flowers, or September when the light gets proper low and golden. Winter works if you don't mind mud.
