This works best for walkers who want something straightforward without the crowds you'd get at Clumber Park, just a few miles south. It's free and open access, though there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. Allow an hour or so for a decent amble, longer if you're the type to stop and look at things properly.

Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes - there's no real destination or viewpoint, just trees and more trees. But if your lot enjoys a forest ramble without needing a big heritage story attached, you'll get your money's worth. It's genuinely handy if you're staying at Clumber Park Lodges or Clumber Park itself, as an alternative to the busier main estate. Bring waterproofs - the paths can get boggy after rain. Quiet and unpretentious, which is exactly why it's worth knowing about.
