Gorleston Golf Club sits right on the edge of Great Yarmouth, and it's a proper links-style course that doesn't pretend to be something it isn't. You're playing alongside the Norfolk coast here, with that particular East Anglian flatness that either appeals to you or doesn't - there's no middle ground. The course plays through open grassland with enough water hazards to keep things interesting, and the wind off the sea makes club selection properly challenging rather than just a formality.

This one's for golfers who want an actual round rather than a tourist attraction. If you're staying at Haven Hopton Holiday Village just down the road, or any of the other parks dotted within a couple of miles, it's worth checking if they have guest rates - local knowledge suggests some do a deal. Allow three and a half hours for a round, maybe four if you're taking it seriously. Bring a jumper. The course isn't free, obviously, but it's not stratospheric either.

Families without golfers in the party should probably give it a miss - watching someone play 18 holes isn't most people's idea of holiday fun. But if you've got one member of the group who actually wants to play, and the rest want a morning sorted, it works. The clubhouse does food, which helps pass the time if you're a non-golfer waiting around. Winter's quieter, summer's busier, midweek's cheaper - the usual story.
