Goodyear Neighbourhood Park

The wetland pools at Goodyear are what draw you in first - shallow, reed-fringed stretches that attract more birdlife than you'd expect this close to Brewood. It's a proper nature reserve rather than a manicured park, which means muddy paths, overgrown edges, and the occasional surprise when a heron lifts off without warning.

Walkers and keen birders will find real value here. The reserve isn't massive - you can cover the main circuit in under an hour - but it's the kind of place where you notice things if you slow down. Dragonflies in summer, overwintering wildfowl in colder months. The paths are manageable for most fitness levels, though they get boggy after rain, so decent footwear matters.

It works brilliantly as a break if you're staying at Oakland Holiday Park nearby. Rather than driving somewhere for a bigger nature attraction, you can walk or bike over, spend 90 minutes watching the water, and be back for lunch. Families with restless kids might find it a bit slow - there's no playground or facilities to speak of, just observation and fresh air.

Free to visit, open access as far as I can tell. Early morning or dusk are your best bets for seeing wildlife without crowds. Spring and autumn migrations bring the most interesting birds. It's not a day-out destination on its own, but as a morning walk while you're in the area? Worth the detour.
