Godworth

You don't climb Godworth for the mountain. You climb it because you're already in the Cockermouth area and fancy a proper leg-stretcher that won't demand a full day of your time. The peak itself isn't dramatic - it's northern Lake District stuff, all working hills rather than showstopping crags. But that's precisely why locals and sensible walkers like it.

The walk up is straightforward enough, mostly through farmland and bracken with views that open out as you gain height. Nothing technical, nothing that'll leave your calves screaming the next morning. On a clear day you get sight lines across to the proper fells, and that's when you understand why people bother. The summit itself is modest - a few rocks, a cairn, and the sort of breathing space that makes you remember why you left the car behind.

This is walker territory, not the Instagram crowd. If you're staying at Whinfell Hall Farm Campsite, it's close enough for an afternoon outing without needing to pack supplies or start at dawn. Families with older kids will manage it fine. The real test is the weather - come on a grey day and you're just trudging through cloud. Pick the right window and it's well worth the two-hour roundabout.

No facilities on the peak itself, so bring water. Cockermouth's a proper market town if you need proper food and a pint afterwards - plenty of reason to make a day of it rather than treat Godworth as a tick-and-move.
