The old mining ponds around Glyncorrwg have been transformed into something altogether different from what came before - a proper mountain bike centre that's also genuinely brilliant for anyone who just wants to walk around and see what nature does when given half a chance. You're looking at a series of interconnected reservoirs set into the Welsh valleys, surrounded by moorland and forest, with trails threading through the lot.

Mountain bikers absolutely own this place, and fairly so - the trails here are well-maintained and genuinely fun, ranging from beginner-friendly loops to proper technical rides that'll sort the capable from the cautious. But walkers shouldn't write it off. The water is the real draw, honestly. On a clear day the reflections are lovely, and you might spot otters if you're patient and quiet about it. Allow two hours minimum if you're just walking; bikers will want three to four depending on which routes they tackle.

It's free to access, which makes it feel even more of a bargain. The nearest settlement is Port Talbot, just a few miles down the valley, and if you're based at Willow Springs Campsite nearby you've got an easy escape route for a day out. The landscape here is what appeals - industrial heritage slowly being reclaimed, moors opening up, genuine South Wales scenery rather than anything manicured. It won't suit anyone after a quick twenty-minute visit, but if you've got time and decent footwear, worth the drive.
