Glenfarclas Distillery

The smell hits you before you've even parked the car. Glenfarclas sits just outside Keith in Aberdeenshire, and it's one of those rare distilleries where you genuinely feel like you've walked into a working place rather than a visitor attraction bolted onto a factory floor.

You get the full whisky-making tour here - from the malting floors through to the copper stills, where the spirit gets that distinctive fruity character Glenfarclas is known for. The distillery has been family-run since 1836, which means the operation moves at its own pace. No rushing through. The guides know their stuff and aren't afraid to tell you when something's just tradition or when it actually matters.

The tasting at the end is proper - they'll pour you different ages and let you work out what you're drinking rather than selling you a story. Some visitors find the warehouse tours a bit long, but if you're into understanding how wood ages whisky, you'll be gripped.

Allow at least two hours if you're doing the full experience. It's worth ringing ahead to check what's on, as opening hours vary seasonally. Not free, but fair value given what you get. Families with teenagers interested in the process will find it engaging; young kids might struggle with the length.
