Glen Parva Nature Reserve

You won't find crowds at Glen Parva Nature Reserve, which is precisely why it's worth the short drive south of Leicester. This modest patch of woodland and grassland does what it says on the tin - gives you a proper walk without the tourist infrastructure. The reserve sits on former industrial land that's been left to rewild, and there's something oddly satisfying about spotting birds and small mammals in a place that was probably concrete a few decades ago.

It's a decent spot for a morning ramble if you're based at one of the local caravan parks like The Paddocks or Fortway Farm Leisure & Fishery. Most people manage it in an hour or so, depending on pace and how much you stop to look at things. Walkers and birders will get the most from it; young children might find it a bit quiet unless they're genuinely keen on spotting wildlife. Spring and summer are when it comes alive - the insect activity alone is worth timing your visit for.

The reserve is free to access, which helps. There's nothing fancy here - no café, no visitor centre - so bring what you need. It works nicely as part of a wider day out around Leicester's green spaces rather than as a destination in itself. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks and want to stretch your legs without driving far, this does the job.
