Glapthorn Cow Pastures NR

A small woodland reserve just outside Peterborough that punches well above its weight. Glapthorn Cow Pastures is run by the Wildlife BCN and feels genuinely wild despite being nowhere near remote - there's proper forest floor here, dappled light through the canopy, and the sort of quiet you don't expect so close to a market town.

It's a walker's spot rather than a destination in itself. Allow an hour at most, though you could stretch it to ninety minutes if you're into birds or want to potter about identifying plants. The trails aren't taxing - good for families with school-age kids, less ideal for pushchairs. What makes it worth the trip is the feeling of stepping away from things. You get badgers here, various woodland birds, and in spring the bluebells are decent enough.

The reserve is free to access. Check the Wildlife BCN website before you go - opening hours aren't always clear, and they sometimes do guided walks that are worth joining if the timing works. Best visited autumn through spring when the woodland floor is more interesting and you're less likely to overheat.

If you're based at Brightside Caravan Park or New Lodge Farm Bulwick nearby, this makes a solid morning out. Neither is far away. It's not the kind of place you'd plan a day trip around from far afield, but as part of an East Midlands holiday - mixing forest walks with easier market town exploring in Peterborough - it fits naturally. Proper little spot.
