Glandyfi Castle

The remains of Glandyfi Castle sit quietly above the Afon Dyfí valley, a short drive south of Machynlleth. It's not much - a handful of crumbling stone walls and earthworks where a Norman fortress once stood guard over the river crossing - but there's something genuinely atmospheric about the place, especially if you catch it on a grey Welsh afternoon when the mist rolls in off the valley.

You'll spend maybe twenty minutes poking around the ruins themselves. The castle was built in the 12th century and has been left to the elements ever since, which means it's free to visit and demands no admission fees or opening hours nonsense. What you get is a proper hands-on history experience - no gift shop, no interpretation boards, just you and the stones. History enthusiasts will appreciate the medieval layout still visible in the earthworks, while families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming if they're after something more obviously dramatic.

If you're based at Cambrian Coast Holiday Park or Searivers Caravan Park during a Ceredigion break, Glandyfi makes a worthwhile detour. The Afon Dyfí Valley itself is lovely for walking, and you can combine a castle visit with a riverside ramble without eating up a whole afternoon. The nearest town of Machynlleth is just five miles north, so parking and facilities are straightforward enough. Worth the drive if you're in the area, though don't expect Conwy-style grandeur.
