Gilmour’s Linn and Charlie’s Cave

The walk down to Gilmour's Linn takes you through proper woodland, dappled light filtering through the canopy as the path narrows toward the gorge. You'll hear the water before you see it - a decent waterfall thundering into a dark pool below, the kind of spot that feels genuinely wild despite being within walking distance of Stirling town centre.

Charlie's Cave sits just nearby, a small rocky shelter carved into the gorge wall that locals have whispered about for generations. Whether there's any real history to the name is anyone's guess, but standing there watching the water crash down gives you that tingle of possibility. It's the sort of place kids will find brilliant for an hour or so, poking about the rocks and splashing in the shallows, though don't expect them to be entertained all afternoon.

The walk itself is genuinely lovely - maybe forty minutes there and back from the nearest accessible point, manageable for most fitness levels but not a doddle. The ground gets muddy and uneven, especially after rain, so proper footwear matters. Spring is probably your best bet, when the water's high but you're not slipping about on ice.

If you're staying at Witches Craig Caravan & Camping Park just outside Stirling, this makes an excellent morning outing before heading elsewhere. It's free, there's no visitor infrastructure whatsoever, and that's actually its appeal - you get the gorge and the falls without the roped-off nonsense. Worth the detour if you're in the area, though don't go expecting anything Instagram-famous.
