Gill's Lough

The water here sits surprisingly still on most days, ringed by low woodland that's thick enough to feel properly secluded without being gloomy. Gill's Lough isn't a dramatic statement of a lake - no mountain backdrops or famous viewpoints - but that's rather the point. It's the kind of place where you notice things: how the light hits the surface at different times, which birds are fishing, whether the paths are muddy enough to regret your shoes.

It works best for walkers who aren't after a massive expedition. The circuit around the lough takes a couple of hours without rushing, and the terrain is straightforward enough that kids from about eight onwards won't struggle. You're close enough to Hillsborough that it's an easy slot into a day that includes the castle or a wander through the village itself.

The Lakeside View Caravan Park sits just five and a half miles away, making this a natural choice if you're staying put for a few days rather than road-tripping across the region. The access is free, and there's parking nearby - though it fills reasonably quickly on summer weekends, so going early or midweek is smarter.

Don't expect facilities or crowds. This is more contemplative than showy, the sort of spot where people come to think rather than photograph everything. There's real value in that if you're after something quieter than the standard attraction runs, though if you need amenities or a definite plan, you might find it a touch too low-key.
