Gillfield Wood

Walk into Gillfield Wood near Dronfield and you're straight into proper woodland - tall oaks, birch, and whatever deciduous trees have decided to grow here over the decades. It's the kind of place where dog walkers outnumber tourists, which tells you something about how local it feels.

The wood itself is unremarkable in the best sense. No visitor centre, no marked trails with interpretation boards explaining the ecology to death. Just paths threading through trees, some boggy in winter, some pleasantly shaded in summer. You'll spot bluebells if you time it right - April into May - and there's enough space to lose the crowds if you're willing to wander off the main track.

It works well for families with young kids who don't need a destination - they'll entertain themselves climbing on fallen logs and jumping over streams for a solid hour. Walkers using it as part of a longer route through the Derbyshire Peak find it a decent transition zone between the moorland and the settled villages. History enthusiasts won't find much, but the wood has been here long enough that it feels ancient regardless.

If you're based at Chatsworth Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite five miles down the road, Gillfield Wood makes an easy morning sortie. Grab an hour or two, bring the dog, don't expect facilities because there won't be any. Go for the walking, not the sights. It's genuine woodland without the twee factor.
