Gibbon's Coppice

A proper woodland walk through Shropshire's industrial heritage landscape. Gibbon's Coppice sits just outside Coalbrookdale, that famous cradle of the Industrial Revolution, and the forest itself tells the story of land reclaimed from centuries of mining and iron-working. The coppice is managed woodland - mixed broadleaves, mostly - and while it's not going to knock your socks off with dramatic vistas, it's exactly what you want if you're after a quiet couple of hours among the trees without the crowds.

The paths are well-trodden and manageable, so families with school-age kids will manage fine. Younger children might find an hour enough before the novelty wears off, but if you've got teenagers who actually walk, or you're a keen naturalist type, you can easily stretch to two hours and still feel like you've only scratched the surface. The real appeal is context - you're walking through woodland that's been coppiced for centuries, and knowing you're in the shadow of Coalbrookdale's furnaces and forges adds a layer of interest that a generic forest walk wouldn't have.

It's free to access and open year-round, though autumn's properly lovely when the canopy turns. Spring's decent too, when the woodland floor comes alive. If you're based at Irongorge Camping or one of the other parks nearby, this is an easy add-on to your itinerary - no need to drive far, and it saves you petrol for exploring the Ironbridge Gorge Museum or the gorge itself. Not spectacular, but solid and real.
