Giant Bench and Glorious Views

You'll spot it from half a mile away - a wooden bench the size of a small garden shed, perched on high ground east of Cambridge with views that stretch for miles across the Cambridgeshire flatlands. It's the kind of thing that makes you smile before you even get there, and the reality doesn't disappoint. The bench itself is properly enormous, carved from pale timber and solid enough that you can actually sit on it without worrying about structural integrity. Scrambling up gives you a proper sense of achievement, even if it's not exactly mountaineering.

The views are genuinely worth the trip. On a clear day you're looking out across farmland rolling toward the horizon, with Cambridge itself visible in the distance. It's the sort of landscape that looks flat on a map but rewards a bit of elevation - suddenly there's depth and distance to it. The spot works best on a breezy afternoon when the light gets interesting, and early morning can be lovely if you can face the drive out.

It's free, obviously, and takes maybe twenty minutes to find, photograph, sit on, and absorb. Families with kids will get a kick out of climbing the beast. Anyone doing the caravan circuit around Shepreth Mill or Guilden Gate should absolutely factor in an hour here - it's daft but worthwhile, and breaks up the driving nicely. The nearest town is Cambridge, though you're well away from the tourist crush out here.
