Gethley Wood

The Forest of Dean gets all the attention, but Gethley Wood near Chepstow punches well above its weight. It's a proper woodland walk through mixed deciduous and conifer forest, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. No car parks, no gift shops, no crowds - just the sound of boots on leaf litter and the occasional pheasant bolting through the undergrowth.

The woodland opens up enough to let light filter through, particularly lovely in spring when the bluebells come thick. The ground's fairly flat compared to what you get elsewhere in Monmouthshire, which makes it manageable for families with younger legs, though it can get boggy after rain. Most people do a circuit of around an hour to ninety minutes, though you can stretch it if you're in no rush.

It's the kind of place that appeals to walkers and nature watchers more than thrill-seekers. Kids under seven might find it a bit samey - stick them in a buggy if you're set on going. If you're staying at Penhein Glamping just down the road, it's worth the short drive as an easy morning walk before heading to Chepstow itself.

There's no facilities on-site, so bring water and don't rely on phone signal. Free to access, though you'll want sensible footwear. Go in winter when it's less crowded, or early morning any time to avoid meeting everyone else with the same idea.
