Gentleman's Mound

Gentleman's Mound is one of those local walks that doesn't make it into the glossy guidebooks, which is precisely why it's worth your time. A decent peak just outside Lanark, it offers proper views across South Lanarkshire without requiring proper mountaineering skills or a full day's commitment.

The walk itself is fairly straightforward - you're looking at around an hour return trip depending on your pace and fitness level. It's the sort of place where locals bring their dogs and families tackle it on a Sunday afternoon. The summit rewards you with a decent vantage point over the Lowlands, though it won't stop your breath in the way the Southern Uplands might a few miles further south.

Walkers will get more from this than anyone else, honestly. It's a solid leg-stretcher if you're basing yourself at one of the holiday parks in the area - Ecosse Glamping is only a few miles away and makes a natural jumping-off point. Kids can manage it fine, though there's nothing particularly exciting once you reach the top, so don't expect them to spend ages up there.

Timing-wise, go when the weather's reasonable. Scottish Lowland hills can turn miserable fast, and cloud often rolls in without warning. Early afternoon is safest - you'll have light and visibility both working in your favour. Free to access, naturally, as most Scottish hills are.
