The Gateway Gallery sits right in Perth's heart, and it's one of those spots that sneaks up on you. You're wandering through the city centre and suddenly there's a proper contemporary art space with real bite to its programme. The building itself does the job - clean, modern lines - but it's what's on the walls that matters. They rotate exhibitions regularly, so you won't get the same show twice, which keeps repeat visits worthwhile.

This is genuinely for art lovers rather than casual browsers. If you're the type who reads the wall text and stands staring at a piece for five minutes, you'll lose an hour here easily. Families with young kids might find it a bit thin on entertainment - there's no interactive elements that I could spot, just the work itself. That said, teenagers with any artistic inclination will appreciate seeing local and touring exhibitions without the baggage of a massive national institution.

Free entry, which is brilliant. Allow 45 minutes to an hour depending on what's showing. Winter's decent for a visit - quieter than summer - though Perth's never exactly rammed anyway.

If you're camping at Scone Camping and Caravanning Club Site just up the road, this makes a solid rainy-day plan. Newmill Farm is a bit further out, but Perth itself is walkable enough that you could combine it with a browse of the high street or a coffee stop. It's the sort of space that rewards attention without demanding hours of your holiday.
