Gatebarrow

From Cockermouth, Gatebarrow rewards a proper woodland walk with views that stretch across the Derwent Valley towards Skiddaw. It's not one of Cumbria's marquee peaks - there's no café, no visitor centre, no crowds - just a modest summit crowned with heather and bracken where you can actually hear yourself think.

The walk itself is the main event. You're climbing through mixed forest for the first half, the path well-trodden but never dull, then breaking out onto open moorland where the real views kick in. On a clear day you're looking south towards the Lake District fells; on a grey one, at least the ridge walk is atmospheric. Allow two to three hours for a steady round trip, depending on your pace and whether you dawdle (which you probably will).

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's accessible without being trivial, and it fills the gap nicely between a quick stroll and a full day's expedition. Kids aged eight or nine upwards should manage fine, though younger ones might struggle with the climb. It's free, as these things usually are on National Trust land or common ground, though check locally before you head out.

Stay at Greysouthen Caravan Site just 2.3 miles away - genuinely well-rated and close enough that Gatebarrow becomes an easy morning or afternoon addition to your park holiday. Whinfell Hall Farm is another solid option if you're looking for a bit more space, though that's six miles off. Either way, you've got proper fell walking on your doorstep without the Helvellyn crowds.
