Garth Hill Platform House

There's not much left to see at Garth Hill Platform House, but that's rather the point. What you're standing on is a Bronze Age platform - essentially the flattened remains of a prehistoric dwelling that's been here for roughly 4,000 years. It's the sort of place that requires a bit of imagination to bring alive, which some visitors find thrilling and others find, well, underwhelming.

The site sits above Port Talbot, and on a clear day you can see why someone might have chosen this spot to settle. The views across the valley are genuinely good, and standing there knowing you're literally walking on Bronze Age foundations does give you a proper sense of connection to the past. It's not a visitor center or a reconstructed settlement - it's raw archaeology. You get what archaeology actually is: subtle, incomplete, and requiring you to do some of the work.

This is squarely for history heads and anyone serious about Bronze Age Wales. Families with young children might find the lack of interpretation panels and interactive elements a bit thin. There's no admission charge that I'm aware of, and you can visit whenever - it's essentially an open landscape site. Allow half an hour if you're walking up from Port Talbot, though the actual time on site could be ten minutes unless you're really keen.

It pairs well with a stay at Willow Springs Campsite, just six miles away, giving you a sense of the archaeology underpinning this corner of South Wales without the crowds of more famous sites.
