Garral Hill

The walk up Garral Hill from Keith takes you through proper Aberdeenshire terrain - moorland that opens up as you climb, with views that stretch across the Highlands proper once you've done the graft to the summit. It's not a massive peak by any measure, but the climb is steady enough to feel like you've earned the vantage point at the top.

The surrounding landscape is what makes it worthwhile. On a clear day you get a sense of how the land rolls away towards Speyside and beyond. Walkers will appreciate the moorland path and the relative quiet of the spot - you won't find crowds here. Families with reasonably fit kids can manage it, though expect grumbling on the way down if legs are tired.

Allow yourself two to three hours for a comfortable round trip from the base, depending on fitness and photo stops. There's no charge and no facilities, so come prepared with water and decent boots. The weather up here changes fast, so check the forecast before you head out - mist can roll in quickly and turn a good walk dull.
