Garbutt Wood

Walk into Garbutt Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper ancient woodland - the kind of place where the canopy gets so thick you need a moment for your eyes to adjust. It's a few miles northeast of York, easy enough to reach but far enough to feel genuinely remote.

The wood itself is small and intimate rather than sprawling. Paths wind through beech and oak, with the forest floor soft underfoot most of the time. It's the sort of spot where you notice details - moss-covered logs, shafts of light cutting through the trees, the occasional clearing where bluebells or wild garlic will be thrashing in spring. Honestly, it won't take you more than an hour to walk through properly, maybe ninety minutes if you're dawdling.

Families with younger kids might find it bit short for the drive, but older children who enjoy spotting wildlife or just mooching about will get something from it. Dog walkers love it here - the terrain's manageable and there's space to move about.
