Gaol House

King's Lynn's old prison is tucked away on a corner you'd easily walk past if you weren't paying attention. The Gaol House is a proper Georgian building, all red brick and barred windows, that actually feels like a place where something happened - which it did, for over a century before closure. You can walk round the exterior and peer through the windows to glimpse the cells inside, though access to the interior itself may be limited depending on what's on.

It's straightforward stuff, really. No theatrical recreation or actors in period dress. Just a building that held people, and the architecture speaks for itself. The narrow cell windows and heavy doors tell their own story without needing much explanation. History buffs will find it genuinely interesting; families with young kids might need a bit of context to keep them engaged beyond five minutes.

Free to look at from the street, which is just as well because there's no formal visitor centre attached. Allow maybe fifteen minutes if you're stopping by, longer if you're the type who reads every plaque and wonders about individual stories. Winter mornings are best - the light hits those red bricks properly, and you won't be fighting crowds.

If you're basing yourself at Kings Lynn Caravan & Camping Park or the Sandringham site just up the road, the Gaol House makes a decent brief stop while you're exploring the town itself. Pair it with a proper look round King's Lynn's medieval streets and the Saturday Market Place, and you've got a proper afternoon sorted.
